Projections

The population in year 2000 in La Martinique island was 381.949 people according to the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN). According to the projections made on a five year time period interval, the population in the island increases steadily in a slight exponential increase.

This increase starts at around 7000 people, reaching up to 12000 from the previous five-year interval. The diagram on the right displays the total amount of the population in the island as well as the increase in these five-year time periods.

Population

The population of La Martinique currently exceeds 350.000 people. It shows han uneven distribution of the population. High density areas are located around the main town of Fort-de-France, leeward in the bay area where the port is located and where all the trade and basic economic activities were developed along history. This fact allowed the flourish of urban areas, the main airport of the city and the largest concentration of the population.

Regions in the north and south of the island show lower densities, also corresponding to those areas where the mountains are located, hence with a more scattered distribution of the population.

Regions where population density is higher reach up to 75.000 people in these communes around Fort-de-France, while those rural areas far from the capital of the island show an average of 1000 people on communes with similar areas or surface.
